This painting was created during my residency at Bankside Hotel, where I’ve been exploring the theme “Form and Flow.” Inspired by Claire Jacksons Klein Blue collection, drawing upon the colour’s rich history; from precious lapis lazuli more valuable than gold in Renaissance times to Yves Klein’s revolutionary International Klein Blue that liberated this ancient pigment into pure modernity. A figure enveloped in cascading blue fabric against a golden background. Where Claire uses geometric abstraction to express certainty in a time of uncertainty through this impactful colour, I explore the human form as a site of similar tensions, creating a moment of profound immersion where the ultramarine becomes both architecture and atmosphere. The blue carries its spiritual and psychological weight, creating a cocoon that could be protective or constraining, a threshold between visibility and concealment. The golden background serves as both architectural space and the warm light that has traditionally set blue’s cool depths into relief throughout art history, creating those tensions between ancient and modern, structured and fluid, that define this residency where river meets stone.
